Geren new bench coach

Bob Geren has been chosen as the 2012 bench coach for the Mets.
The Mets have selected former Oakland Athletics manager Bob Geren as the team’s new bench coach. He was picked over former Washington Nationals manager Jim Riggleman, according to a source familiar with the process.
“Bob Geren’s experience as a former manager and bench coach will be a great fit for us,” manager Terry Collins said in a statement. “Adding a former major league catcher like Bob to our staff will be ideal.”
Despite only two widely named candidates, the Mets had been due Friday to speak with Dave Jauss as well. Jauss actually was Jerry Manuel’s bench coach for one season and also served in that role for the Baltimore Orioles.
Geren had a 334-376 record as Oakland’s manager from 2007 until his dismissal midway through this past season.
Meanwhile, there were no indications the first-base coach job would be imminently filled. A team insider said the Mets will value diversity in that hire. They also presumably would be looking to hire someone with outfield experience to succeed Mookie Wilson in instructing that position, since new third base coach Tim Teufel has an infield background.
A Mets source confirmed longtime minor league instructor Kevin Morgan has interviewed for the first base coaching position. He has an infield background.

J.P. Ricciardi, a deputy to Sandy Alderson with the Mets, is a candidate for Orioles GM, according to Buster Olney.
Former Toronto Blue Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi, who currently oversees professional scouting for the Mets, is one of six candidates for the Baltimore Orioles’ GM position, ESPN’s Buster Olney reports.
The others: Josh Byrnes, Gerry Hunsicker, Thad Levine, Tony LaCava and Dan Jennings. Other candidates may be added, according to Olney.
Meanwhile, according to the MLB Network (via Metblog), Larry Bowa will in fact interview for the Mets’ bench coach job. A source told ESPNNewYork.com this week that Jim Riggleman and Bob Geren were poised to interview, but that it did not appear likely the Mets would actually meet with Bowa. ESPNNewYork.com also has identified John McLaren as a candidate.
Backman may bolt for Nats

Wally Backman is considering joining the Washington Nationals as a major league coach, according to the Post.
With the Mets set to interview former Nationals manager Jim Riggleman for the bench coach position Wednesday, Wally Backman may be headed the opposite direction.
Backman is considering joining the Washington Nationals as a major league coach on the staff of his former manager, Davey Johnson, the Post reports.
Sandy Alderson suggested last week on a conference call to announce Mets coaching changes that Backman was poised to become Triple-A Buffalo manager. If Backman remains with the Mets organization and fills that role, he would succeed Tim Teufel as Bisons skipper. Teufel is replacing departed Chip Hale as Mets third base coach.
Backman managed Double-A Binghamton this past season. He rejoined the organization in 2009 to manage the Brooklyn Cyclones.
“Wally has a history of motivating his players and having success,” Alderson said last week.
UPDATE: Bill Ladson, who covers the Nationals for MLB.com, reports Washington does not intend to put Backman on its major league staff.
View from 1999: Grand slam single

AP Photo/Chris Gardner
Robin Ventura hit what should have been the first walk-off grand slam in MLB history on Oct. 17, 1999, in Game 5 of the NLCS against the Braves. The only problem? Teammates mobbed him before he had even reached second base, so Ventura only received credit for a single. Hence, Nelson Cruz’s walk-off slam on Monday night for the Rangers officially is the first in MLB postseason history.

Former managers Jim Riggleman and Bob Geren will interview for the Mets’ vacant bench coach job as soon as Wednesday, according to an organization source.
